Tennessee readers are saddened by the news of yet another deadly accident on the state’s roadways. Any motor vehicle accident that ends a life is distressing, but when a young life is lost it often strikes a deeper chord among a community. Such is the case in the recent death of a 5-year-old boy from Cookeville.
Upon preliminary investigation, police assert that the crash took place on U.S. 27 in Leesburg. A late model Kia Sol with three occupants was traveling in the southbound lanes when another vehicle approached from the rear. That vehicle, a bucket truck operated by Sumter Electric Cooperative, Inc., crashed into the back of the Sol.
It’s not yet clear why the 59-year-old driver of the bucket truck failed to change his rate of speed as he approached the slower-moving vehicle. The resulting crash left both adult occupants of the Kia with serious injuries. The 5-year-old child riding in the vehicle was gravely injured and was unable to recover. He was flown to an area hospital, but emergency medical workers were unable to revive him.

There is no word on the relationship between the occupants of the Sol, but all three shared the same surname. As the man and woman who survived the crash recover from their injuries, they will also begin grieving their loss. The driver of the bucket truck suffered only minor injuries in the motor vehicle accident. As of yet, no criminal charges have been filed in Tennessee, and no indication has been forthcoming on whether the family plans to file a civil suit in the matter.
