What Is a Coma?
When someone is in a coma, they are in a state of unconsciousness that can be caused in many different ways — such as a stroke, brain tumor, drug or alcohol intoxication, or illnesses such as diabetes or an infection. However, since car accidents are one of the top causes of traumatic brain injuries, likely, someone who has sustained a blow to the head in a car crash may be at risk of a coma. Here’s what to expect.
How Long does It Take for Someone to Come Out of a Coma?
Often, comas are portrayed on television and in the movies as a permanent state of unconsciousness with no hope of recovery. These portrayals are large misrepresentations and exaggerations about the condition for entertainment purposes. Thankfully, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a coma lasts between 2 to 4 weeks. Although rare, someone can experience a certain amount of awareness after a persistent vegetative state or may remain in that state for years or decades.

What Is the Recovery Process?
Over several weeks, a person may slowly start to regain consciousness and become more aware. Doctors will carefully monitor and assess a person’s consciousness by using the Glasgow Coma Scale. The Glasgow Coma scale assesses the following by using a scoring system from zero to fifteen:
- Ability to open eyes
- Verbal responses to commands
- Voluntary movements in response to a command
Scoring an eight or less overall indicates a coma. A score between 9 and 12 means the condition is moderate, and a score of 13 or above indicates a minor impairment to consciousness.
