When individuals are placed in nursing homes, their relatives generally expect them to be treated with professionally appropriate care. Regrettably, that is not always what happens, and some elderly patients become victims of nursing home abuse in Tennessee nursing homes. In one recent case in another state, a nursing home employee apparently abused a patient and was arrested.
A patient at the nursing home was observed to have a number of bruises on various parts of his body. According to reports, staff members witnessed a fellow employee get on top of the patient and strike him. The patient suffers from dementia, and the injuries caused him to be hospitalized for six days. Apparently, the worker actually confessed to committing the abuse. He is said to have informed authorities that he became irritated with the patient and that is when he assaulted him five times during the course of his shift.
The worker faces serious charges for abuse on a vulnerable adult, and if convicted, he could be sentenced to serve two years in prison. The Michigan facility is part of Consulate Health Care in Florida, which owns multiple locations throughout the country. The facility in Michigan, one of 20 in the state, was fined nearly $15,000 two years ago after a patient did not receive CPR and died.

Family members are often horrified at the thought of a loved one being victimized by nursing home abuse. Unfortunately, abuse happens far too often at the hands of those who are supposed to be caring for patients and keeping them safe. In similar circumstances, negligence claims may be pursued against the facility to seek recovery of monetary damages occasioned by the abuse. A personal injury attorney in Tennessee with experience in handling these types of claims can provide valuable support and assistance in seeking justice through the civil court system.
