A recent investigation has documented that many women have suffered complications after using a special kind of birth control device. The Mirena intrauterine device, which is being used by women in Tennessee and throughout the nation, has been linked to numerous injuries reported by women who used the device. It is estimated that nearly two million people are actively using these potentially defective medical products.
Since 2008, over 1,000 women are reported to have suffered uterine perforation from this device. One woman had such intense pain that she was hospitalized. X-rays showed that it had gone straight through her uterine wall and was inside her abdomen. Surgery was necessary to remove it.
The reported problems have spurred numerous defective medical products lawsuits against Bayer, the manufacturer of the device. Reportedly, 100 cases have been filed against in a New Jersey civil court. Another 50 have been filed in federal court. According to lawyers representing those allegedly injured by this device, the victims were not informed that there was the risk of puncturing the uterus.
Women living in Tennessee and elsewhere that have been injured by the Mirena device may be able to seek compensation to help pay medical expenses and cover other monetary damages incurred. A thorough legal analysis by a personal injury attorney experienced in defective medical products can determine whether there exist legal grounds to support a personal injury claim. At the very least, women who are currently using the Mirena intrauterine device should consult with their doctors to determine if there are any problems related to the device.
