According to Tennessee State Troopers, a tragic semi truck accident claimed the lives of two drivers on a recent Saturday evening. The 18-wheeler accident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. along Interstate 81, not far from the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Both the semi-truck driver and the driver of another vehicle were killed in the accident.
The crash happened when the semi-truck drove into the back of another car. The 54-year-old driver of the 18-wheeler was killed as a result of the accident. The 81-year-old driver of the car was pronounced dead later that day after doctors tried to save his life. The elderly man’s 75-year-old wife, who was riding in the car with him, was in critical condition as of Feb. 23.
The personal injury and death that comes along with an 18-wheeler accident is nothing short of tragic. The medical bills associated with injuries can be staggering, and some victims are left with no choice but to foot the bill. Victims (including the surviving dependents of someone killed in such a crash) do have the right to seek restitution to help pay for their medical care from those parties deemed negligent in causing or materially contributing to the accident.

In the instant Tennessee 18-wheeler accident, if police determine that the semi-truck driver was negligent in causing the crash, the injured woman and family members of the deceased elderly man may choose to commence personal injury and wrongful death claims against the trucker’s estate. Depending on the facts relating to the incident, the plaintiffs may choose to name both the driver and — if applicable — his employer as defendants. In many cases, if an individual causes an accident while performing his or her job duties, the employer may be held liable for the damages and injuries caused by the legal theory of respondeat superior.
